No preamble tonight. League Cup quarter-final for the Badgers away at Hamble Club. Brock don’t have a great recent record at the Abbey, and the recent league meeting was… controversial. Let’s not dwell on that; best move on. The Monks have very strong recent history in this competition, reaching the last two finals (both against Portchester, won one and lost one), so there was no sense that they were going to be taking this one lightly, especially with a playoff spot seemingly already sewn up in the league.
The first 20 minutes or so of the game were quite even, and Brock created the first chance – a sharp passing move, good cross from Brooks, header from Colmer straight at keeper Henry Newman. Both sides were moving the ball well enough but both seemed a bit shot-shy, and when Hamble did manage to get efforts on target, they were straight at Valero, from both Mazi and Casey. Gradually, the Monks started to assume control of the game – Lovell with a powerful shot well saved by Valero, and then Douglas with a free-kick 25 yards out which hit the top of the bar. But the Badgers were struggling to gain controlled possession in the opposition half, and that generally means trouble… a clever break from Hamble, releasing the impressive Douglas into space down the right, sweeper-keeper Valero came out but was never getting there… Douglas chipped the ball past him and goalwards from about 25 yards but somehow it rolled wide of the far post. But just when it looked as if all the huff and puff was going to be in vain, central defender Brad Johnson picked the ball up near halfway, strode forward and lashed a powerful shot into the corner from the best part of 30 yards to give the Monks the lead. Great hit, fair play. The hosts might have extended their lead just before the break but Valero made another excellent save, and when the ball came back to Yeomans he shot wide (curiously given as a corner). HT 1-0
Hamble now had a grip on the game, and it wasn’t one they intended to let go. The early skirmishes saw them continue to dominate the ball, assisted by some odd refereeing decisions, but they doubled their lead on 57 minutes: a neat move, good ball retention in a tight space near the touchline, passed inside to Matt Casey on the edge of the box and he was able to turn unchallenged and find the far corner for 2-0. Brock had the occasional moment – almost all featuring Freddie Beale on the right wing – but the chances continued to mount for the hosts. Douglas hit a brilliant free kick from near the touchline, blocked away by Valero, but ten minutes after scoring the second Hamble had their third, a poor defensive header allowing Douglas to break the line and pull the ball back for Nick Yeomans to score. Three very good goals, whatever the defensive questions, and the game was now beyond the Badgers. Yeomans shot just wide; Douglas with another screamer of a free-kick from 30 yards, well saved by Valero… sub Jordan Cunningham bringing another save; and then in overtime, Cunningham seared past everyone on the right and saw Valero make an excellent save, the ball was finally recycled to Francis whose shot was blocked at source, looped into the air, and brought another outstanding save from Valero, tipping the ball onto the bar. Just prior to that, Casey might have had a penalty – certainly looked to be held back – and for Brock, Wellman tried to divert a Bailey shot goalwards but it rolled wide. FT 3-0
Honesty dictates that I say: the better team won. Three very good goals, and while there was a period when Hamble got the run of a few yellow-tinted decisions, they also got the rough end of a few towards the end of the game. I’ve said before that they’re a good side; they deserve their place in the semifinal against Wincanton Town, and a chance for a third successive League Cup final. For Brock, seven league games left, and it’s everything to play for. But first, the U-18s have their own league cup semifinal against Cobham Sports at the Meadens on Thursday – come on young Badgers!
