30 December 2025

OK so it’s the depths of winter… that time of year some people annoyingly call twixmas… still plenty of chocolate and cake to be consumed… and there’s Arsenal v Aston Villa on Sky, first against third, the acid test of title credentials for both.  So where would anyone rather be than The Nest – sorry, the Brian Whitehead Sports Ground – for a third-round tie in the Southampton Senior Cup?  Well, I’ve told you before that it takes a special kind of nutter…  These two teams started the evening two rounds behind Brock – for the winners, a tie against Millbrook or Hamble Club (due to play next Tuesday) for the right to meet the Badgers in the semi-finals.  So was this spying out possible opposition?  Not really; it was just live football without jeopardy (for me, at least – I think the teams cared who won!).

Realistically, the hosts had to be considered the strong favourites for this one – not just a league higher, but in decent form recently following some positive signings.  But Romsey (apparently nicknamed ‘Town’) came into the game on a good run of their own – they’d won all three previous games in December, and not badly placed in 7th with games in hand.  Hopes were high for a competitive game.  Obviously these aren’t teams who I see regularly (in fact I’ve never seen a Romsey game before), and I’m pretty sure that the Robins weren’t at full strength – lots of possible reasons for unavailability, quite apart from cup rotation – I can’t comment on the visitors.

This tie took a long time to warm up, which was perhaps understandable given the temperature (around 0 all evening).  The first half featured some nice touches and sharp passing, but it was almost exclusively in the midfield: moves broke down some way before becoming threatening, and goalmouth action was at a premium.  For the Robins, Ihnatenko couldn’t quite reach in his attempt to bundle a cross home; then Luke Delaney went clear on the left but his cross-shot missed the far post.  For Romsey, Harley Russell was sharp – he had one (tame) shot on target, and lifted a free-kick over the bar.  But that was the sum total. HT 0-0

The home fans were less than enamoured by what they had seen, with constant exhortations to use the wings, but in the first period the Robins had been flightless birds.  Despite Brett Pitman roaring in midfield – usually in displeasure at his team’s failings – they hadn’t imposed themselves on the game.  That did change in the second half, as the hosts stepped it up and looked the more likely, although Russell did have one early shot from 30 yards for Town which was dipping under the crossbar, but Ross Casey was alert to the danger and caught the ball.  No need for a stadium announcer when you get running commentary from the man between the sticks… but Casey remains an excellent keeper.  He wasn’t tested for much of the half as Downton pushed forward – and remembered that they had wings, too – and the breakthrough seemed likely.  Town had the occasional foray forward, on 74 they won a corner and Mlondo Masuku (best Town player on the night) headed wide at the back post: possibly the most presentable chance of the game to that point.  And two minutes later, that miss came back to haunt them – a Robins corner which Bartram only just reached through the melee and his punch seemed to hit Pitman and go in.  We were some distance away and having to watch through a crowd of players, but it was certainly scruffy.  Cheers of relief from the frustrated home fans who had long known who was going to score, even while berating his all-round performance and workrate.  Guaranteed goals aren’t a thing to be sniffed at, guys!  Anyway: back came Town, now with a bit more purpose and perhaps they’ll be wondering what might have been if they’d been braver sooner.  6 minutes to go, a great long pass set Brandon Hill in on goal – taken out by Casey – looked to be just inside the box – and here the ref definitely got it wrong.  It was either a penalty or it was a yellow card for simulation; the ref, otherwise very good, bottled it and gave neither.  (For my money it was a stonewall pen, but I got one look at it, from one angle…)  Then Woodward had a clear chance and Casey closed the gap fast to make the save… and then right on 90 minutes, Woodward again, skipped round his defender and took the ball past Casey but far too wide – pulled it back to the edge of the box, Marcinkowski with a perfect shot curling to the far corner, superbly saved by a diving Casey who tipped it away.  A late flurry of set pieces for Romsey which saw keeper Bartram join the melee in the box, but nothing came of them and the game was done.  FT 1-0

Not gonna lie: it was cold.  Very cold.  But for all that, it was quite a watchable game and, while it always seemed likely that the hosts were going to find the goal they needed, it certainly wasn’t completely one-sided.  Perhaps I should have noted that Romsey have conceded second-fewest in their division but not scored many; they look a decent outfit though, on this showing.  For the hosts, the quarter-finals await.
