Two points from four games – tough games, in large part, it’s true – and Brock have suddenly slipped to 9th in the table, having been 4th a couple of weeks ago. Playoff prospects are slipping away… Those three games against Portland, Baffins and Lavvy always looked likely to be decisive, and defeat in the first two has made the equation very tricky indeed. And now in fourth place sit today’s opponents Laverstock & Ford, who have been on a strong run of form themselves with five wins from their last six. So a tough afternoon in prospect for the Badgers.
This was a tale of heartbreak for the Badgers, so nearly claiming a precious and deserved point, ultimately denied at the last. For the Bulldogs of Laverstock, no doubt, it was a tale of euphoria, a winning goal deep into stoppage time when a goalless stalemate seemed almost certain. It was also a tale of a game ruined by the wind – strong and gusting, carrying the ball in surprising directions and making controlled football extremely difficult, quite apart from the dry bouncy pitch. There was effort aplenty from both sides, but quality was in short supply (although I think the suggestion that it was no better than pub football was a little harsh!). Shoutout too to reference Surman, who had an excellent game in very tricky conditions. Two evenly matched teams, both defending well, excellent off the ball, keeping their opponents at arm’s length. The first meaningful action didn’t occur until the 20th minute when Carson Arnold picked up the ball and was able to run the best part of 30 yards unchallenged before sending a cross-shot harmlessly wide. Then Brock had their own first opportunity – Walker charging down an intended clearance from keeper Roberts, the ball looping into the air (and caught by the wind), but Beale and Walker between them didn’t find a shot on target. Lavvy again – a deep cross, headed wide by Kane O’Keefe (I think) when he seemed certain to score – he looked to be a mile offside but no flag so maybe it would have counted. Valero saved low down from Cegielka… Demira shot high for Brock from 25 yards… and in injury time, almost a moment which would have encapsulated the conditions, Valero’s clearance holding up in the wind, reaching Adam Bourner about 30 yards out and he returned it with interest but just wide of the post. HT 0-0
The Badgers’ task got a whole lot harder seven minutes into the second period. Rossi, booked in the first half, with a clumsy challenge just outside the box, second yellow. Now it was eleven against ten… but in all honesty, you wouldn’t have known it. The Bulldogs seemed surprisingly shot-shy, especially given the conditions which added an element of uncertainty to everything, but Brock held firm at the back (Liam MacFarlane showing yet again how he’s mature beyond his years), and the workrate from the remainder of the team was outstanding. Lavvy had more of the ball but were struggling to do enough with it. Arnold with a powerful shot – cannoned into Bourner, standing in an offside position. Two occasions in succession where Valero had to tip the ball over the bar, once from a corner and once from a chipped cross as the wind threatened to take the ball in. The best chance of the lot, a rare moment of real quality saw Bourner played in but maybe he tried to be too clever and Valero made an excellent save at his near post. But gradually the Badgers worked back into the game. 15 to go, Freddie Beale doing Freddie Beale things, taken out by Jake Waston just outside the area on the right; Beale powered the free kick goalwards and Roberts made a strong save. Time running out, Brock won a free kick on the left, superbly played in by Walker and some pinball in the box before it ran wide. And then, the gut-punch. Three minutes into overtime, a long aimless ball forward from Lavvy, the wind took it out for a throw near the Badgers’ own goalline… and Brock lost the ball, it was hoisted into the box, and this time the bounce fell kindly for the Bulldogs, Kane O’Keefe with a piledriver into the far corner from about ten yards to steal all three points. Lavvy celebrated it like – well, like an injury time winner. Harsh on Brock; but that’s football. FT 1-0
Fair to say I was gutted when that goal went in – gutted for the players, who had worked so hard and thoroughly deserved to take a point. OK so a point ultimately wouldn’t have been enough for the playoffs – that’s now officially gone – but a point would have been just reward for a battling performance, especially with ten men. Dylan will be several inches shorter tonight, he ran his socks off. Toby as ever, driving the team forward and putting out fires. Liam, superb at the back. Jordi, being Jordi. Henry, another excellent – OK let’s stop here before I list everyone and we’re still here tomorrow morning. Credit to Lavvy for not quitting (maybe they should try shooting more often? Seemed like only Carson Arnold was allowed to, although he was a danger all afternoon)… Bourner impressed me… but really, I’m only there for the Badgers and I am gutted for them. Oh yeah, I might a few inches shorter too, the number of times I had to run into the next-door field to fetch the ball! All in a day’s work… OK. Two to go. Final push, starting at home to Sherborne on Tuesday, and I really hope to see a great crowd to thank the team for their efforts this season.
